What started off as a brief speculation post about a new actor being cast in the Thor sequel evolved into a relatively large Thor update post…

Casting for the sequel to Thor is quickly underway and I am giddy with excitement!

As announced during this year’s Comic-Con, the title of the movie is going to be Thor: The Dark World and scheduled for release on November 15th, 2013.

Villains/Plot/New Characters

Earlier this month, Christopher Eccleston was confirmed to play Malekith, ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim (one of the Nine Realms mentioned in the first movie). Dark Elves = Dark World perhaps? In the comics, Malekith has the normal attributes of a dark elf, which includes superhuman strength, stamina, speed, intelligence, and agility. Malekith can also manipulate magic for a variety of effects, such as teleportation, flight by transforming into mist, casting illusions, and the ability to change the shape and appearance of others objects. He has a vulnerability to iron, which can cancel his magical spells (not sure they’d include that in the movie). He’s served by minions Bitterhand, Wormwood, and Grendell.

In the comics, Malekith once allied himself with Loki and wound up controlling the Casket of Ancient Winters (wielded by Loki in the first movie). Said Casket is an object of immense power that can bring down the infinite cold of the Niflheim Realm. It’s already been confirmed that Loki will play a role in the movie but not that of the main villain, so I’m assuming their teaming up will occur in the sequel. Such an alliance works quite well considering both are masters of illusion.

Shown: issue #347 of The Mighty Thor. I have not read that issue so I’m not 100% certain of the woman but I believe it’s Lorelei, sister of Enchantress and an Asgardian. She was once kidnapped to use as bait to lure in Thor so I could see a very similar situation happening with Jane Foster.

Rene Russo will be reprising her role as Frigga with a (supposed) larger role in the sequel. Her role was cut down from the first film but according to the actress, “But I think they’re going to need a good mom in the next film. Loki needs his mom. I have a lot of compassion for [Loki]. But we might have to have a conversation about what he just did”.

The movie will also address what’s been happening in the Nine Realms now that the Asgardians are unable to use the Bifrost. Guessing this will be a brief synopsis of the realms rather than delving into each individual one. But apparently what’s been happening since the destruction of the Bifrost is “not good”.

Just recently Alice Krige confirmed she’s been cast in an undisclosed role in the movie. The only thing said thus far is she may be unrecognizable. Pure speculation on my part but perhaps Alflyse, queen of Svartalfheim and the Dark Elves?

Casting Updates:

Zachary Levi will be replacing Joshua Dallas as Fandral. Originally Levi was up for the role in the first film but had to back down due to Chuck. Now Dallas is having to back down due to his role on the show Once Upon a Time. Tentatively okay with this. Fandral’s role was relatively minor in the first movie but I did enjoy Dallas’ portrayal. However, Levi seems like a very standup guy. Just wondering how he’ll look as a blond…

Kat Dennings supposedly “can’t talk” about her role as Darcy, Jane Foster’s intern. I’d be very okay with her not returning. Her role was purely for comedic effect and unnecessary. With all the other items slated for the sequel, I feel her presence would just bog down the movie. However, her refusing to talk about it makes me believe she’ll actually be reprising the role; otherwise you’d think she’d be very candid about just saying, “No, I won’t be returning”.

Relationships:

Marvel Studios President Kevin Fiege snippets of an article from April,

While the relationship between Loki and Thor has certainly changed after the events of The Avengers and has progressed, a lot of Thor 2 is picking up where it left off in terms of Jane. The heart of the story is to be Thor and Jane and continue their dynamic (me: a thousand times yay). “Really they were only together for three days and do they love each other? Do they like each other? Do they know each other? We’re acknowledging that that love story in the first movie was sort of a quick crush, essentially, over the course of three quick days in the middle of the desert”.

Another “heart of the movie” aspect is the relationship between Thor and Odin, which has changed drastically as it did over the course of the first movie.
